Tapa, media ración or ración: Spanish portion sizes explained
Spanish bars often sell the same dish in three sizes. A tapa is a small plate of a few bites, a ración is a full plate meant for sharing, and a media ración (half portion) sits in between. Menus that use this system show up to three prices per dish, so you can try more dishes by ordering smaller sizes.

- Tapa / Media ración / Ración
- Meaning
- Portion sizes in Spanish bars: tapa (small plate), media ración (half portion), ración (full sharing plate).
What each size means
- Tapa — a saucer-sized plate or a slice of bread with a topping; enough for one person to taste.
- Media ración (½ ración) — roughly half a full plate; good for two people snacking.
- Ración — a full plate meant for the table to share, often enough for two to four people as one of several dishes.
Sizes aren't regulated, so they vary from bar to bar. Not every dish comes in every size: many bars sell only raciones and medias raciones, and some dishes (a whole tortilla, grilled fish) only as a ración.
Free tapas and pintxos
In Granada, and in other cities such as Jaén, Almería and León, bars commonly serve a small tapa free with each drink, and the next drink often brings a different one. Elsewhere you may get a few olives or crisps with a beer.
In the Basque Country and Navarre, pintxos are priced one by one. You pick them from the counter or order hot ones from the board, and tell the bartender what you had when you pay.
How much to order
For two people, three or four medias raciones make a light meal; add a ración if you're hungry. Order in rounds rather than all at once — that's how locals do it. MenuGuide translates a photographed menu dish by dish and shows the prices in your currency, which helps when the three columns are in small print.
Frequently asked questions
Are tapas free in Spain?
Sometimes. In Granada, Jaén, Almería, León and some other cities, a small tapa typically comes free with each drink you order. In most of Spain, including Madrid and Barcelona, tapas are paid for, though a bar may add a few olives or crisps with your drink. Anything listed on the menu with a price is charged.
How many tapas should I order per person?
For a light meal, plan on two or three tapas, or one to two medias raciones, per person. Raciones are bigger and meant for sharing, so two people might share three or four of them as a full dinner. It's normal to order a first round, see the portion sizes, then order more.
What is the difference between tapas and pintxos?
Pintxos are the Basque Country's version of bar snacks, usually a bite of food on a slice of bread, often held together with a cocktail stick, and priced individually. Tapas is the general Spanish word for small plates. In practice both are bar food meant to go with a drink; what changes is the format and how you order.
